As “depredations committed on the seas by certain lewd and
ill-disposed persons”.
However in English common law, piracy has been characterised
as, “…acts of robbery on the high seas”. It was in 1698 during King William III
reign that the Piracy Act “applying to all felonies and robberies committed on
the high seas” came into creation and imposed death penalties for piracy that
remained in force until the abolition by the Piracy Act of 1837 ......
